The stage is set for Happy Abandon to be a ground-breaking group” (Paste Magazine)

Happy Abandon is an orchestral indie rock band, based out of Chapel Hill, NC.  Formed in 2015, the band members met as students, at the University of North Carolina.   Consisting of Peter Vance (Vocals, Guitar), Jake Waits (Drums, Percussion), Justin Ellis (Bass) and Alex Thompson (Keyboards, Programming).

Happy Abandon’s sound can only be aptly described by a hybrid of their critical praise: “A crescendo of chiming guitars, layered with bright textures, propulsive bass lines, stormy and tight percussion and fuzzy synth.  With a wide influence of music from around the globe, the band emulates theatrical imagery while exploding into a rousing instrumental coda with dreamy vocals and highly intelligent lyrics.”

Their self-released debut EP “Heavy Lines” was produced by Grammy-nominated producer John Custer (Corrosion of Conformity, Cry of Love) and is a stunning debut for a band that had only formed a few months prior to recording.  Happy Abandon is currently in the studio with Producers Jamie Candiloro (REM, Ryan Adams, Willie Nelson) and Jason Merritt (Tift Merritt, Hot Hot Heat) to record their debut full-length album which is set to be released on the indie label Schoolkids Records (Tommy Keene, Bettie Serveert, Swervedriver, The Church) in August 2017.

Receiving rave reviews from local and national press alike, a band wise beyond their years, Happy Abandon poses to be one of the next break-out bands from the talent-rich North Carolina music scene, which has garnered success from such artists as:  The Avett Brothers, Tift Merritt, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, Ben Folds and Ryan Adams, to name a few.  This simply, is a band on the verge of creating their own identity and making its mark.

In regards to the lyrical meaning, in a recent interview with Paste Magazine, singer Peter Vance commented:

“The inspiration for the song ‘If I Stare’ comes from the question of what makes someone happy, what makes someone scared, and how the two are related. It is human nature to fear death. Time ticks in one direction, and we can’t control that. We all want to feel accomplished before time undoubtedly stops, but what if you don’t know what you want to accomplish before that happens,”

“The fear of never finding out can ultimately prevent people from ever finding out. It creates this sort of feedback loop where one is using so much energy, but never actually accomplishing anything. So instead of looking forward at the unknown, people find comfort in looking back at what has already been set in their own personal timeline. I feel overwhelmed by this idea all the time, and it’s exhausting. I feel like I have to be someone I’m not just so I can be as present as possible.”

Charming and brilliant vocals are prominently displayed within the piece, with a blissful and enchanting bed of music that is layered throughout. Picking up in intensity, the song entices your ears with elements of classic Indie nostalgia, with a sugary, unique twist and Pop sensibility. Echoing harmonies are laced with a haunting string section which will make you fall in love. “If I Stare,” is a breakout single for the band, as they put their name on the map as a noteworthy and unforgettable musical force.

– Louise Parker, Paste Magazine
As a dynamic first statement, ‘Heavy Lines’ makes a case that Happy Abandon could break through to the big stages its idols occupy – Spencer Griffith, Indy Week

There is a strong spirit of dream pop embedded in a gutsy sound. They achieve a big sound as the production is strong as the guitars ring out steadily. It is the lead vocals that resonate profoundly, as the singer pulls and pushes his words with a dramatic flair with no shortage of grace. This is smart music, well produced, and with lots of heart.

The Veldt are a unique and singular, musical proposition – authentic American soul music, without post-modern irony, without cliché. If the Velvet Underground had left the Factory and toured with STAX … They are Kane’s kissing kousins  – Rudy Tambala (A.R. Kane)

Their awesome wobbly psychy guitar music and from-the-heart soulful vocals are as wonderful as ever…myself and Robin Guthrie are just 2 screaming fans – Creation Records’ Founder Joe Foster

For black artists, doing anything outside of the bubble, beyond what’s derivative of what white kids are doing, being able to express yourself honestly, is not celebrated at all. So when I heard these guys, it gave me confidence – Doc McKinney (The Weeknd, Drake, Estherio)
